Upcoming Book Adaptations: Ranked Based on Excitement

Today, we’re doing something a bit different! You see, there are so many book adaptations releasing in the near future that I can’t wait to see! Unfortunately, it will take a while before I get to see them, but in the meantime, why don’t I share my excitement for some of these adaptations?

Based on (some) books I’ve read, I’ll be discussing upcoming adaptations and my overall thoughts on them! It’s been a long time since I’ve done a ranking, so I figured this would be the perfect way to start anew. With all of that said, let’s begin!

8. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

I think most of us know what this book is all about, but in case you don’t know, it’s a prequel to the infamous hunger games that follows the antagonist’s journey many years before the trilogy takes place.

Since The Hunger Games was a grand story with an intricate political system, I really thought I’d enjoy this prequel. But it ended up being somewhat of a letdown… which is why I’m not overly enthusiastic about this movie.

The only reason why I’m interested in watching this film is because Rachel Zegler will appear in it, and I absolutely loved her West Side Story. Apart from that aspect, I would be fine not watching it.

7. Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Have I read this book by any chance? …no. Yet surprisingly, I’m actually looking forward to this book adaptation. Red, White and Royal Blue has captivated me for a long time: the romance between a British prince and the First Son of the United States sounded like the most surreal story I’ve ever heard of.

If there’s one thing that surprised me, it’d have to be the casting. I definitely didn’t think the actors who were in The Kissing Booth 2 and Cinderella would star in this adaptation. Yet, despite that, I can’t wait to see how Amazon will develop this story.

6. The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

This trilogy and I have a love-hate relationship. I enjoyed the first book and its simple premise of two best friends who go to a school where people are trained to become heroes and villains. The second book, on the other hand, took everything I disliked from the first book and amplified it. And the third one… was a wild ride.

Nevertheless, despite all the chaos that went on, I actually have high hopes for this movie! After seeing the Netflix teaser, I was blown away. Sophia Anne Caruso is the definition of perfect casting for Sophie, and I’m interested in seeing how Sofia Wylie will play the role of Agatha.

(Let’s not forget that Kit Young, also known as the actor who plays the brilliant Jesper, will also appear in this film. If this doesn’t convince someone to watch this movie, I don’t know what will.)

5. With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

This book was one that meant the absolute world to me. Reading the tale of a teen Puerto Rican mom with a passion for cooking broke me in so many ways I can’t describe. I finished it in two days and have even reread it a few times by now! So imagine my enthusiasm when I heard this book was getting a movie adaptation.

There hasn’t been much information about the movie. But it has been confirmed that Acevedo herself will be writing the screenplay, which only heightens my enthusiasm for this book adaptation! I honestly cannot wait to see this gem of a book brought to life on screen; whatever happens, I’m certain it’s bound to blow us all away.

4. Nimona by N.D. Stevenson

I’m not sure if a graphic novel about villains trying to prove that the good guys aren’t as good as some people think counts, but I just have to share this wonderful story. You see, time and time again, this adaptation has gone through the biggest mayhem to get adapted. And just when the movie was almost done, its studio shut down.

But since Netflix is now the one that will release this adaptation, I am over the moon! I’ve read Nimona a few times by now, and it’s a perfect tale filled with chaotic adventures and mischievous characters that you’ll simply adore. The teaser image was everything for me, and I can’t wait to see what this film has to offer.

3. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This book is probably one of the few that I’m most excited about! Although we don’t know much about the adaptation, we do know that Netflix will be the one releasing the movie sometime in the future. However, I do wish The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a limited series rather than a film.

Seeing Evelyn Hugo’s life as she reaches stardom in the 1950s through a series would’ve been the ideal formula to tell this wonderful story! It would’ve been fun to see different episodes dedicated to each of the husbands. But outside of that, I’m still looking forward to this adaptation. From the moment I began to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I knew it deserved to be on screen. I just can’t believe that will soon become a reality!

2. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

Just a while back, I saw the teaser for the upcoming Percy Jackson series on Disney+. And after seeing it, I only have one thing to say: it’s pure perfection. From the monologue, the setting, and the casting, I genuinely feel like this is one of those adaptations one will be able to look at fondly. (And even if that isn’t the case, it can’t be worse than the movies.)

I’m actually quite behind, given that I’ve only read The Lightning Thief, but this teaser genuinely makes me want to reread the first book and finish the series as soon as possible. I’ll probably dedicate an entire day to reading Percy Jackson just so I’m not behind when the series comes out.

1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I know The Lunar Chronicles is only being optioned at the moment, but I couldn’t help mentioning this possible adaptation. Apparently, the sci-fi retelling series could be adapted as an animated film, in comparison to the usual live-action format. And while this is something that might not interest some people, I actually love this idea.

Animated shows and films have a special place in my heart, so to have one of my favorite series of all time as an animated movie would mean everything to me. I think The Lunar Chronicles is one of those series that wouldn’t have the same feeling if it was in live action. However, if it was animated, I believe it’ll only take the original series to the next level.

  1. looking forward to a lot of these, great list Aster! Its been a while and I’m not sure I remember much about School for Good & Evil, but the costumes look amazing, trying to avoid seeing the trailer so I can go into it with a fresh perspective!! I’m also the most excited for Nimona, I remember really enjoying the graphic novel 🤭💖

    1. Knowing my very impatient self, I’ll probably watch the trailer many times over and analyze every scene. But I totally get wanting to go into the show with a fresh perspective! Let’s hope all goes well with the Nimona adaptation; it’s been far too long, and I can’t wait to see it!

    1. Thank you! It’s wonderful to see that someone else liked West Side Story! I honestly feel like the general consensus is that everyone hates the ballad of songbirds and snakes, so I hope the film has at least a few redeeming qualities.
